What is Acute Limb Ischemia?

ALI is blood clot (thrombus) formation in arteries of legs / hands. It leads to abrupt cut-off in blood circulation of legs / hands leading to death of the body cells of particular limb.

Is it a serious problem?

Yes. It’s an emergency condition & you must see a qualified vascular surgeon immediately.

Why does it happen?

Mainly two reasons

1. Clot, pushed out of heart towards arteries of legs (Seen in patients with pre-existing heart problems)

2. Fresh clot formation at areas of partial blockage (in pre-existing peripheral arterial disease patients)

• Blue /black colour changes in toes / fingers
